The
term " icon " is of Greek origin and means picture or resemblance.
In its most common modern acceptance, it applies to a religious picture
painted on a mobile wood panel, representing either a " portrait
" (Christ, the Blessed Virgin, the saints) or a scene, and destined
to worship.
A work of art and an object of worship at the same time, the icon is above all the pictorial expression of the Orthodox faith. It has a very important place in art history, but also in the Eastern spirituality and worship and, above all, in the Byzantine worship. |
